Back story: I alone have thrown out a shopping cart of food in one day while working in one of the biggest grocery chains in Illinois. This realization really bothers me because I came from the Philippines where hunger & starvation is critical. For some, living conditions are so bad that they choose to live in a landfill in order to be first in line for food scraps when the garbage truck arrives. In contrast, my work doesn’t allow us to give excess food away, and we are expected to discard it. We want to stop hunger but we can’t find an effective solution for ending food waste, which has become an environmental, social and financial problem.
